Every taxpayer’s situation is unique and therefore it is impossible to list all of the items one must bring in for every type of situation. The following is a list of the most common items to bring with you.  You do not need an appointment to drop off this information as a drop box is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
 

Income Statements

W-2 Forms, 1099 Forms, interest income (Form 1099-INT), dividend income (Form 1099-DIV), pension or IRA distributions (Form 1099-R), Social Security (Form SSA-1099), brokerage account forms (Form 1099-B).

Identification

Your driver’s license or other state-issued photo ID and your spouse’s, if applicable.

Itemized Deductions

Property Tax Bill, interest on mortgages and home equity loans (Form 1098), charitable donations that you have receipts for, out of pocket medical expenses, (limits apply, must be over 7.5% of your gross income).

Charitable Contributions

Please provide the amount of charitable donations that you have receipts for.   A deduction is now available even if you are not able to itemize the deductions listed above.

Dependents

Please provide dependent’s full names, dates of birth & social security numbers.

Dependent Care Expense

Please provide the names of each care provider, their address, federal identification number or social security number, and the amount paid to each provider. 

College/Higher Education Expenses

If you or any of your children attend college, you may be entitled to a deduction or credit.  Typically the college will issue a Form 1098-T in the student’s name.  This is usually available online and can be printed from the college website.  Although this is issued in the student’s name, the tax credits are available to the parent if they are claiming the student as a dependent.  Additionally, if the student is required to purchase books, equipment or supplies for the courses taken, these items may also be a tax benefit.  

Direct Deposit

For faster refunds, direct deposit to your bank account is recommended, but not required.  If you choose this method, please provide us with your bank’s name, routing and account number.  A copy or voided check works well.

Homeowners

For those who qualify for the Property Tax Adjustment Credit, please provide the name, social security number and income of anyone who lived with you during the current tax year.  Also include non-taxable income such as child support, cash public assistance or VA benefits. Please provide a copy of your most recent Property Tax Bill. 

Renters

Please provide the amount of months that your rented.  If you received rent subsidy, please provide the total amount of rent that you paid.  Landlord’s are no longer required to issue a Landlord Certificate but you will need to provide the SPAN number for the property you reside in.  This can be obtained by either the Landlord or the Town Clerk’s Office in the town you reside.

Home Improvement – Energy Credits

These are the most common items available for tax credits.  Please provide the amount paid for any of the following:

  • Insulation material primarily designed to reduce heat loss or gain
  • Exterior doors that meet or exceed Energy Star requirements
  • Exterior windows and skylights that meet or exceed Energy Star requirements
  • Qualified natural gas, propane, oil furnace or hot water boiler
  • Pellet stoves
  • Highly efficient wood stoves
  • Qualified solar electric
  • Qualified solar water heating

Use Tax

If you purchased items online or out of state and did not pay sales tax, please provide the amount you purchased for the year.  You may exclude shipping, food and clothing purchases.  If you did not keep records, there is an optional method based on a percentage of your income.  Please let us know if this applies to you.

Miscellaneous

Please bring any other official tax documents you received not mentioned above. Please be sure to notify us if there have been any changes since last tax year, such as address, telephone number or change in the number of dependents you can claim.
